According to experts, mixed groups appear less and less in K-pop because of the complicated management method and the difficulty of having a large fan base.
Back in the 1990s, it was not difficult to see the existence and success of mixed groups in the Korean music market. The word mixed is used to refer to groups that consist of both male and female members.
Such groups are easy to attract attention when debuting because in the music market there are usually only male or female groups.
Mixed group that soon blooms and fades
According to The Korea Times, groups that include both male and female members have their own advantages in terms of lineups and musical styles. However, after a strong rise in late 2000, the group music category has dwindled in strength. Today, the group is rarely seen in the Kpop universe.KARD - consisting of 2 male members BM, J.Seph and 2 girls Somin, Jiwoo - is one of the active groups.
Critics say the only factor that determines the group's existence is their work into a loyal and steady fan base.
Pop critic Seo Jeong Min told The Korea Times, "It's hard for a multi-gender group to attract more female fans than a boy group or attract more male fans than a girl group. Most entertainment companies also receive requests to manage a group higher than a typical boy or girl group. Members of a K-pop group often live together in a dorm to promote teamwork.
Can the mixed group respawn?
In the summer of 2020, the group SSAK3, formed on the MBC reality show, Hangout with Yoo. The success story of SSAK3 led many people to come up with group combinations that could make a team.
However, critic Jung Min Jae said SSAK3 was just a "school exception".He admitted: “SSAK3's success does not represent the recovery of groups. The power of a program communication makes SSAK3 nearly impossible".According to Jung Min Jae, SSAK3 was succeeded by 3 members who are available in famous languages and Hangout program with Yoo.
